Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a six-week aquarobic exercise on physical fitness, body composition, and psychosocial health promotion among middle-aged women.

Methods: In this study, a quasi-experimental research design with a one group pretest-posttest design was carried out. The sample consisted of 24 subjects from Busan Metropolitan City, Korea, and who did not engage in regular aerobic exercise. They were 45¡65 years of age, and were willing to participate in this study. The aquarobic exercise program lasted one hour twice a week for six weeks. Body fat percentage, trunk and shoulder flexibility, balance, hand and foot agility muscle strength, and coordination were measured by using equipment of the Sport-for-All Busan Association. Depression, life satisfaction, and activities of daily living (ADLs) were measured through questionnaires. The data were collected from September 17 to October 24, 2003. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, and paired t-test using SPSS Win 10.0.

Results: In terms of physical fitness, shoulder flexibility, agility(hand & foot), and coordination significantly increased after aquarobic exercise. Trunk flexibility, balance, and muscle strength showed no significant decrease the exercise. Depression scores and life satisfaction scores significantly increased after the exercise.

Conclusions: The aquarobic exercise is recommended as a useful form of nursing intervention that could help promote physical and psychosocial health among middle-aged women.
